It is easily forgotten, but up to the launch of this car Audi’s profile was far lower than the premium manufacturer it is now (2013). The A4 marked a watershed moment in the larger acceptance of premium manufacturer supplied fleet cars. This was very much a sign of things to come.

Many times it has been reported that the 3 Series outsold the ubiquitous Ford Mondeo as top fleet/corporate car. This mainly wasn’t true but the numbers were often close (sales of 50-60000 units per year.) Downsizing. The Golf had it’s mojo back after the comparatively duller Mk4. With rising fuel costs, and the cars themselves being larger in successive generations – this Golf marked a key point in the large switch to ‘smaller’ vehicles. However, the premium manufacturers were soon to follow.
