Demand surges for alternatively-fuelled vehicles

July’s new car registration statistics showed a 64.9% surge in demand for alternatively-fuelled vehicles (AFVs) with 8,871 new vehicles being registered, according to the latest vehicle data published by the SMMT.

AFVs now have a 5.5% market share, compared to 3% in July of last year – representing a significant increase.

Although diesel vehicles are down 20.1% year-on-year, they still represent a large proportion of new car registrations with a 42.7% market share. Petrol car registrations saw a 3% reduction year-on-year but continue to dominate the market with a 52% market share.

Overall 161,997 new cars were registered in July, down 9.3% year-on-year, marking the fourth consecutive monthly decline. Demand was down across all areas including business, fleet and private sectors.
